Canada is facing a housing affordability problem. According to the National Bank of Canada, as of Q4 2021, affordability has worsened at the fastest pace in more than 26 years. It currently takes 48% of income for a household to service a home mortgage in Canada.

In early 2020, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation collaborated with Global Advantage Consulting Group to create the Housing Innovation Ecosystem Map (2020) in order to identify key stakeholders, funding, programs, outputs, sectors and technologies, and highlight opportunities in this ecosystem. This map was developed to assist CMHC in the implementation of the National Housing Strategy, a 10-year $70+ billion plan with the ambitious goal to build up to 160,000 new homes and cut chronic homelessness in half.
