Just a few years ago, I walked into the Global Advantage office as an intern – eager, curious, and admittedly a little overwhelmed. I was pursuing my graduate studies at Carleton University at the time, and while I had a strong desire to learn, I didn’t have much experience with Excel, stakeholder engagement, or the inner workings of Canada’s innovation ecosystem. What I did have, however, was curiosity, and, thankfully, a supportive team who believed in potential over polish.
From day one, I was welcomed into an environment that was both intellectually rigorous and incredibly supportive. The team at GA took the time to introduce me to the foundational tools and concepts that drive our work – terms like innovation, ecosystem, and productivity. Words we all hear frequently, but ones I began to understand in a deeper, more practical context through real-world research, analysis, and collaboration.
Over my first year, every day felt like a new learning experience. Whether it was mastering a new data collection method, discovering a powerful new dataset, or helping map out a strategy for a government client with a vision for Canada’s future, I was constantly growing. And as an immigrant from Russia, the journey was even more eye-opening. I thought I knew Canada – a beautiful, welcoming country with kind people. But through this work, I discovered so much more: the intricacies of its political system, the breadth of its natural resources, and the remarkable diversity across its regions and industries.
I’ve had the chance to explore sectors I never imagined diving into, from health and biosciences to cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, agri-food, and AI. Each project gave me a fresh perspective on Canada’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities. And each one reminded me of why this work matters.
Now, as a Lead Research Analyst, I get to help guide others on similar paths, contributing to projects that help shape strategy, policy, and investment decisions that impact the nation’s innovation capacity and competitiveness. It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly.
